Does a credential still signal anything when producing the artifact it certifies is nearly free?
The shift
A credential worked as a costly signal: the certified artifact — the graded essay, the passed exam, the portfolio piece, the completed project — was expensive and hard to produce, so holding the credential proved a capability you couldn't have faked cheaply. AI collapses the cost of producing a competent-looking version of that artifact, which attacks the costliness the signal was built on. What stays scarce is verifying that a specific person can reliably do the work without the tool, and the accountability that some credentials — not all — actually confer.

- A credential signals capability because producing the certifying artifact was costly. The whole mechanism was that clearing the bar cost something — effort, time, ability — that a less capable person couldn't cheaply counterfeit. When the essay, the coding challenge, the take-home case study, and the multiple-choice exam can all be produced or passed by a tool anyone can rent for the price of a subscription, the artifact stops separating the capable from the rest. This hits pure artifact-signals hardest: credentials whose entire content is "this person produced these deliverables under honor-system conditions." The habit-trap: employers and admissions still read a completed portfolio, a certification badge, or a strong transcript as evidence of the person, when it's now evidence of access to a tool.
- The signal can be trusted at a distance without re-testing. Trusting the credential in place of direct proof was rational when re-verifying was expensive. The artifact's collapse breaks the substitution: the credential no longer stands in for capability you'd otherwise have to check yourself. AI can produce the diagnosis or the brief; it cannot hold the license or absorb the liability. Cheapening the exam artifact does nothing to the accountability the license exists to assign. That accountability is why these credentials survive their exams going soft.
- Credentials certifying embodied or physical competence still gate something scarce. The airline transport pilot's checkride, the surgeon's supervised operative log, the journeyman electrician's field hours — these certify a body doing a thing in the physical world, verified by an examiner present in the room. AI didn't make the artifact cheap here, because the artifact was never a document; it was a performance under observation. The written portion may erode, but the load-bearing part was already embodied and proctored.
- The issuing institution's reputation is the collateral, and reputation is still scarce. A credential is worth what the body behind it can lose if it's caught certifying frauds. That standing — the accreditation, the disciplinary board, the entity that can be sanctioned — is a trust asset AI can't manufacture. As cheap artifact-signals collapse, the institutions with the most to lose have the strongest incentive and the standing to move to harder verification. Where it breaks
Certification bodies are quietly abandoning honor-system take-homes and remote unproctored exams because AI made them unverifiable (an INVALID axiom being dropped), and moving to proctored, live, or in-person assessment — which is exactly the NEW cost problem: verification that AI can't cheapen is an order of magnitude more expensive and doesn't scale. Nobody has repriced the credential to reflect that the expensive part flipped from producing the artifact to watching the person, so credential fees still assume a cost structure that no longer exists.
A second collision, and the sharper one: the market treats "credential" as one category while AI splits it in two. Pure artifact-signals (badges, certificates, unlicensed portfolios) are becoming worthless as evidence of the person, while liability-conferring licenses are largely untouched because their real product was never the exam — it was the accountable human and the legal right to act. Screening systems that filter on "has the credential" (an INVALID habit for the signal-only kind) collide with the reality that only some credentials still gate anything scarce (the NEW sorting problem), and hiring pipelines built on the old undifferentiated category are now trusting the wrong half. Whether the artifact-signal recovers any value hinges on how fast reliable AI-use detection and proctoring improve — a fast-moving variable, so treat any confident call on the signal-only credentials as provisional.
